Who needs George Hotz anyway? A USB modchip for the PS3 has emerged from the mists this morning, purporting to allow the dumping of games onto nearby storage — the console’s internal HDD and external drives are both a-ok — as well as the subsequent playing of said games without the need for the original disc. Could it be the backup/piracy nirvana Sony loyalists have been awaiting for so long? Well, there’s a video showing the little USB device apparently working, and the PSX-Scene team say they have personally verified that it does what it claims to do, but skepticism remains advisable here. The PS3 has been a fortress of hacker unfriendliness, so we’d rather kick back, relax, and wait for some braver souls than us to do the testing. For now, the video awaits after the break.

Coming Soon : Play Starcraft II From Your iPhone

August 30, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

 500x_scphone2

Developer Daniel Hellerman has let us know about an interesting little project he’s working on: an app that promises to let you control Starcraft II from your iPhone (or iPad).

Completely useless in terms of performance it may be, but it’ll still be a neat trick for LAN parties parties, and may even come in handy if you’re stuck on the can a little longer than expected and your build order needs a refresh.500x_scphone1

In addition to the ability to control nearly everything in the game – the app synchs with a program you have to download to your PC, so it’s basically a glorified control pad – it also comes with a Starcraft II unit encyclopaedia and tips on successful build orders.

The Starcraft II Gameboard, as the app is called, is due out next month. Or, it will be provided Blizzard doesn’t shut it down first.

Starcraft II Updates Next Month

August 28, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

Having been out in the wild for almost a month now, Blizzard has decided that changes are in order for Starcraft II, and will soon be making a number of balance tweaks for the game’s first major update. Patch 1.1, due sometime next month, will make a number of alterations to the game’s balance, including: – Reducing the effectiveness of a “Zealot rush” when playing as/against the Protoss – Reducing the effectiveness of Terran Reapers against the Zerg – The power of the Terran Siege Tank will be reduced when in siege mode – Terran Battlecruisers will be less powerful against ground units – The Zerg Ultralisks have lost their “ram” attack, as it was proving in many instances to be less powerful than its regular attack. There are also some minor adjustments being made to some build and cooldown times as well, along with a golbal rollout of the US hotkey layouts, including that for left-handers; for the complete list of changes due in 1.1, check out the official site.

Infamous 2′s New Cole

August 25, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

Gamescom offered us our first look at the newest game from Sucker Punch, Infamous 2, its new lead character Cole—redesigned after negative fan feedback—and one of the lightning powered super/anti-hero’s car-tossing superpowers.

We also got a look at the game’s new setting, the New Orleans-like fictional bayou town known as New Marais. Sucker Punch founder Bruce Oberg said the new, swampy southern city is perfect for showcasing Cole’s destructive powers. (Oberg said the game’s setting was decided upon before hearing about a similar setting in Left 4 Dead 2. When Valve’s zombie-slaying sequel was announced, Oberg relayed an “Oh, shit…” feeling from the team.) We were given a hands-off demo of the game, showing how Cole can rip apart the decaying plantation-style homes and shanty structures that enemy soldiers use to snipe from.

The setting of New Marais also has an effect on Cole’s look. He sports a t-shirt and jeans, ditching his leather from the original Infamous to beat the heat. Cole also sports a new melee weapon in Infamous 2, the Amp, part of the developer’s aim to “amp up” the power of the hand-to-hand combat.

Sucker Punch showed off a mix of that ranged and up-close combat, Cole juggling enemies into the air with the Amp, shocking them into submission from behind cover. The action looked more rapid fire, more fast paced to me, but Oberg said that the two Infamous game’s were similar in speed.

After watching Cole burn through a few military-types in one of Infamous 2′s more rural areas, we ventured closer to civilization.

Sucker Punch showed off a mini-boss encounter with a beast known as the Ravager. It was a spawn of the Corrupted, a swamp-dwelling, burrowing creature that launched toxic green spores at Cole. The Ravager, an insect-like monstrosity, clambered about a city square while whinnying like some mutated, demonic horse.

As bystanders ran chaotically between Cole and the Ravager, the player running our demo fired electrified potshots at the thing, taking out a few pedestrians amid the action. To put the Ravager down, however, required using one of Cole’s new skills, the Kinetic Pulse.

That’s a fancier name for throwing large things at other things. If Cole were a Jedi, it would be a Force push. Cole used the Kinetic Pulse to pick up a couple of parked cars and launch them violently at the Ravager, eventually killing it.

When Cole will get the Kinetic Pulse during Infamous 2′s campaign, we’re not yet clear. But Cole will have to work to rebuild his electrical powers after having his “ass kicked” by The Beast. That will mean new morality choices that affect Cole’s powers, the way New Marais behaves and reacts to Cole, and the way missions adapt to Cole’s decisions.

Infamous 2 will be out in 2011 on the PlayStation 3.

How Much Would You Pay For Quake Live 'Pro' ?

August 7, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

500x_quakelivebeta The makers of free-to-play shooter Quake Live are putting a price on the web-based shooter, offering both "Premium" and "Pro" subscription options for FPS fans. The good news is that you still don’t have to play to play Quake Live.

Yes, Quake Live will still be free-to-play, should you choose that option, but id Software is offering a few perks to players willing to cough up an annual subscription. Those plans range from about $24 to $48 USD per year and include the following enhancements to the current Quake Live experience.

Premium Subscription ($1.99 per month, billed annually)

  • Access to 20 QUAKE LIVE Premium only maps at launch with more to come. Premium maps are a combination of brand new maps and frequently requested community favorites from previous QUAKE games such as Aerowalk, Theater of Pain, Japanese Castles, and Realm of Steel Rats
  • An all new ‘Freeze Tag’ game mode
  • Exclusive premium level awards
  • Create your own clan and join up to five separate clans
  • Custom QUAKE LIVE profile wallpaper
  • Match statistics stored for six months

Pro Subscription ($3.99 per month, billed annually)

  • Includes all Premium Subscription features
  • The ability to start your own game server, specify a server location, determine the game mode and invite who you want to join you
  • With the Pro Subscription, you can invite three friends with Standard level memberships to play with you in any Premium level map
  • Exclusive pro awards
  • Create your own clan and join up to ten separate clans
  • Match statistics stored for 12 months

The good old free version will still offer "friend lists, access to one clan, matchmaking, and stats tracking delivered through a web browser with more than 40 arenas and five game modes."

Kotaku will be looking at Quake Live and everything else Doom, Quake and Rage-related at this year’s QuakeCon 2010, which runs August 12 to 15.

Operation Flashpoint : Red River Next Year

August 7, 2010 by Techz.in [Admin]*

Info

Codemasters follows up last year’s realistic tactical shooter Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising with an all-new entry due in 2011. Operation Flashpoint: Red River will let players visit scenic Tajikistan to experience an "epic campaign." What else?

Red River will, according to its official announcement, "include a deeper narrative-led campaign, streamlined inventory and control system, a refined enemy and squad AI system, player class roles including customizable XP upgrades and loadout choice, close-quarters combat and new air support options."

If that sounds like everything you’ve ever wanted from a realistic, one-shot, one-kill shooter, you may want to invest in an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC capable of playing Operation Flashpoint: Red River before next year.

Codemasters deployed a few "visual target" concept images of Red River today, which fans of lens flare and the United States Marine Corps absolutely should not miss.

250GB Xbox Kinect bundle spotted on 4GB bundle packaging

August 7, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

250gb-xbox-kinect-bundle-short-bAlthough the bundle has yet to be announced, a 250GB Xbox 360 / Kinect bundle can be seen on Microsoft’s Australian packaging for the 4GB Xbox 360 / Kinect box.
The 250GB bundle appears to be very similar to the matte 4GB bundle, with the exception of the larger capacity hard drive, a glossy finish, and the inclusion of a headset. It isn’t clear what game comes with the bundle, though it’s most likely Kinect Adventures, the standard offering in both the standalone Kinect package and the 4GB Xbox bundle. The 250GB model also has the following note: “Hard Drive includes game and demos.” The demos we’re used to, but it seems that Microsoft may be foregoing an extra disc and putting the pack-in game on the hard drive itself.

Four New Playable Species Join The Old Republic

August 7, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

So far we’ve only dropped hints about the range of playable species in Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. You may have heard about the Rattataki Bounty Hunter, Chiss Imperial Agent, or the Twi’lek Smuggler, but we can tell you now that all classes will include optional non-human species.ss_20100806_miraluka01_full

Among the most exciting character types you’ll be able to choose from is the Sith Pureblood. For the first time ever in a video game, Players can choose to be a member of the original Sith Race, the red-skinned descendants of such notorious Sith Lords as Naga Sadow and Marka Ragnos. The rage of these fallen ancestors of the Sith Pureblood lives on in the Sith Warriors who dominate the battlefield with their intimidating presence and aggressive tactics.

ss_20100806_mirialan01_full

A near-human species with unrivaled strength in the Force, Miraluka can become powerful Jedi Knights. Hailing from a homeworld with no visible light waves, the Miraluka evolved to see their surroundings entirely through the Force. To cover their vestigial eye sockets, they wear veils and blindfolds that range from colorful to austere. Miraluka Jedi Knights charge into battle with the Force guiding the graceful attacks of their Lightsabers to always hit home.

ss_20100806_sithpureblood01_full

As one of the most wise and mystical species in the galaxy, the green-skinned Mirialans can become powerful Jedi Consulars. Mirialans are known for their symbolic facial tattoos and natural agility. They are also respected for their patience and insight. Mirialan Jedi Consulars lead Republic Forces into battle with assurance and harness powerful Force energies to defeat their enemies.

ss_20100806_zabrak01_full

Among the slaves serving the Sith Empire, there are many aliens with Force potential, but few species have the grit to join the ranks of the Sith. A proud species from an inhospitable world, Zabraks are among the few with the determination and ferocity to become Sith Inquisitors. Sporting horns and facial tattoos, these fierce aliens are self-reliant and aggressive. Zabrak Sith Inquisitors intimidate both their enemies and their colleagues with their fighting prowess and ruthless command of the Force.
