Opera launches CDK for Connected TVs and set-top boxes

Oslo, Norway and Amsterdam, Netherlands — September 9, 2010

Opera Software has just lowered the threshold for TV content development by unveiling the Opera Devices Content Development Kit (CDK) at the IBC Show in Amsterdam today. The Opera Devices CDK is now available for download from http://dev.opera.com/sdk/.

An important asset to Opera customers and partners, the Opera Devices CDK will now allow any web developer to create content for TVs and other Internet-powered devices, without requiring access to the physical device. Developing HTML5 and HbbTV-enabled content will now be a breeze on the PC platform, rather than the device itself, and debugging will become easy with Opera Dragonfly — the world’s most powerful debugger — which comes as part of the package.

The Opera Devices CDK can be installed on any standard Linux PC and will empower OEMs, content developers, content service providers and Opera partners to create and debug portals, applications, widgets and webpages for TVs and other Opera-powered devices.

OEMs and operators can also use the Opera Devices CDK as a “reference platform”, so, once they develop for one device, they can ensure it works on any device that runs Opera’s widely-used browsers. Opera Devices CDK supports the latest W3C, HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV), OIPF, and CEA-2014 specifications unlocking a new dimension for content developers who can write content for all standards and deploy on Opera TVs anywhere.

“Until now, developers did not have a simple way to create applications for TV,” said Frode Hernes, VP Products, TV and Connected Devices, Opera Software. “With Opera Devices CDK, they can now bring reliable, fine-tuned applications to market much more quickly. Opera has always been on the forefront of innovation. The Opera Devices CDK comes at an optimal time when demand is high and will only grow for TV Apps and other Internet-connected devices.”

Opera Devices CDK provides the following content:

  • Supports all features of the Opera Devices SDK
  • HTML/CSS/JavaScript/DOM
  • SVG, Canvas
  • W3C Widgets
  • HTML5 <video> and <audio>
  • Simulate limited RAM availability
  • Set screen-size tailored to target device
  • Easy to test any webpage
  • Debug with Opera Dragonfly

HTML5 video comes to connected devices with new Opera Devices SDK

Oslo, Norway and Amsterdam, Netherlands — September 9, 2010

Opera Software today released Opera Devices SDK 2.8. Designed for television and other consumer electronics manufacturers, the new software development kit (SDK) features support for HTML5 video and includes Opera’s newest and fastest JavaScript engine, Carakan.

Connected device manufacturers benefit from Opera’s versatility. Opera Devices SDK 2.8 makes it easy to embed a web browser and utilize the full power of the browser engine. Using the SDK, manufacturers can create immersive, yet adaptable, user interfaces and can offer a complete multiscreen web-application and widget experience.

“Today, manufacturers are creating a new generation of connected devices,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Rather than the traditional ‘lean-back’ model of TV interaction, today’s ‘lean-forward’ devices engage the consumer with interactive content and downloadable widgets and applications. Opera’s newest Opera Devices SDK allows manufacturers to build all of those new revolutionary experiences on top of the browser engine. There is no solution that offers the same combination of control, ease of integration, and time-to-market as the Opera Devices SDK.”

The Opera Devices SDK update includes the same rendering engine, Opera Presto 2.6, found in Opera 10.62, the company’s industry-leading desktop browser. Additional features include:

  • Four times the JavaScript execution speed with the new Carakan JavaScript engine
  • Integration with Opera’s new Content Development Kit
  • Improved support for HbbTV and application delivery over broadcast streams
  • A new API to integrate native, hardware-accelerated video codecs, offering a substantial improvement in time-to-market
Meet Opera at IBC

Opera will demo the Opera Devices SDK 2.8 at the IBC 2010 show in Amsterdam. To see the SDK in action, please visit the Opera Software booth in Hall 4, A95.

August 31, 2010 by Subhash Pansare
Filed under Android Device, Techz News

sprint-samsung-epic-4g-on-sale We told you it was coming, now the Samsung Epic 4G is on sale at Sprint for a cool $249.99 plus two year life commitment. In other words, it’s time to let Sprint know whether this Galaxy S variant (with — gasp — working GPS) is worth the $50 premium over HTC’s EVO 4G. Well, is it?

Update: As usual, Amazon’s offering a discount showing a $199.99 listing for new contracts. It still shows a pre-order status (with 2-3 weeks ship time) but that’s likely to change any minute now.

Motorola XT300 mini portrait slider leaks out in clearer photos

August 31, 2010 by Subhash Pansare
Filed under Mobile Phones, PDA / Mobile

XT300

After the first extremely blurry photos and the first video XT300 are now more info and also three more movies to the Motorola Android slider of the Droid series appeared.

In the video can be seen clearly that the smartphone with the MotoBLUR surface under running Android. It is oriented by design heavily on palm Pre with the red eye as the boot logo and the Verizon could Droid series are part, but it is in the GSM radio range, which would speak against again. As you can see, everything is still very speculative. Should the unit appear as real, Motorola would be in addition to Alcatel, the second manufacturer to bring such a category of instruments with Android on the market.

I find a good text in this design is missing in the Android pool, we hope that there will be very low-end is not. What do you say to that part?

Hands on with the Samsung Epic 4G

August 31, 2010 by Subhash Pansare
Filed under Mobile Phones, PDA / Mobile

showimageCA91GZ7U There is no denying the success of the HTC EVO 4G: Sprint cannot keep the unit in stock and two and  a half months after launch supply simply cannot even come close to keeping up with demand.  No doubt eager to capitalize on the momentum Samsung is throwing their name in the hat with the Epic 4G, a Galaxy S phone.  Unlike the Galaxy S variants found on the other three major carriers the Epic 4G offers not only a 4″ Super AMOLED display but also a full QWERTY keyboard.  As the name implies the Epic is capable of running on Sprint’s WiMax network, but also supports 3G over EVDO Rev. A and has Wi-Fi capabilities as well.  It has a rear-facing 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash, complimented by a VGA shooter up front for self-portraits and video chat.

Where the EVO 4G is a heavy slab of industrial design, the Epic is actually rather light.  The two don’t differ much in size, but the Epic is noticeably lighter in the hand, almost to a fault.  Like the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro, you expect the keyboard touting edition to be heavier, bulkier.  Instead the Epic feels almost like a toy.  showimageCAQMFV15Still, the Epic has some advantages over the EVO.  Despite being smaller the display is undeniably better thanks to the Super AMOLED technology.  Like we’ve seen with the other Galaxy S phones it is bright and crisp and vibrant.  Second, the phone has six-axis motion sensing which will make it a better gaming device than the EVO.  Samsung’s Media Hub is a one stop shop to rent videos, though the service has not launched yet so we are unable to try it out at this time.  It will be available by the 31st, which is when the Epic 4G goes on sale at your local retailer.

Of course what most people will choose the Epic 4G for is the physical keyboard.  While it does add bulk to the phone, to some is an absolute necessity and is worth the $50 premium over the HTC EVO 4G.  In our early usage we’ve been accurate with it, but not as quick as we’d like.  We’d the keys are large and well-spaced, but our initial impression is that we’d like some texture to the keys.  They offer good tactile feedback though, and plenty of space to work with.  Stay tuned for our full review of the Samsung Epic 4G, coming soon!

Samsung Fascinate launching on September 8 ?

August 31, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

fasinate

Well this was a nice way to start the day. A tipster has sent us some great material for you to check out below intended for helping Verizon Employees push the Fascinate onto customers (not that it needs much pushing, its pretty sweet). It honestly made me laugh with the topic entitled “Conversation Starters.”

Anyways this pretty much seals the rumored September 9th release in my eyes and reaffirms all rumored specs and features we had seen previously but also provides some pretty nice reading and comparison including a comparison of all the Galaxy S phones vs the iPhone 4 and a little more in depth look at the Bing app vs Google app on both Navigation/Maps and Search…Bing looked good right up until the Navigation, ie VZNav. So take a look and tell us what you think. I have been sold on this from day one, how bout y’all.
