DashPad brings the Dashboard to the iPad

August 24, 2010 by Subhash Pansare

DashPad (US$9.99) takes a unique approach to putting a Dashboard on your iPad. Instead of using an app, (which would never get approved by Apple), or jailbreaking, it uses Safari to serve an iPad specific page that contains eight widgets. More widgets will be coming, according to DashPad’s developer Pixlcreations.

Info

Here’s how it works. First you’re taken to Paypal to tender your payment which triggers an email containing a username, password and a link to the site. After entering the information DashPad opens the Mobile Safari page where you’ll find eight widgets: Clock, Calendar, Calculator, Unit Converter, Sticky Note, Yellow Pages Search, Google Search, and Weather. This is presented just as you’d expect it, with the widgets on the bottom regardless of how you hold the iPad. dashpaddw81910

The rest of the screen is a white field. Just like Mac widgets, you tap on one to activate it and tap on it again to dismiss it. The widgets can all be moved around on the screen. A button shows or hides the widget bar. When you leave the app, it remembers the position of your widgets and the contents of the Sticky Note. It also allows you to put an icon on your iPad’s desktop for quick access, which of course you can do with any Safari page.

This is fine if you’ve become really accustomed to using widgets on your Mac and miss not having them on your iPad. It’s a really neat idea, but after using it, I found quite a number of limitations. You can’t install your own widgets, since they are a part of the Mobile Safari page, however when new ones come out, they will be there the next time DashPad is run.

After not using Dashpad for a day or so you will have to put in your username and password again. This, I’m told, is a security measure and they are working on a way to delay authentication longer. This alone kills the idea of a quick and easy way to get bits of information all at the same time and I would consider authentication at this frequency a deal-breaker.

You are only allowed one Sticky Note, which can be as long as you want and is scrollable. More will be coming, but one is what you get now. The Weather widget, which requires your zip code, doesn’t remember it upon re-launch. The Google Search isn’t useful since it does exactly the same thing as the search bar already showing in Safari. It brings up a new page. Of course hitting the usual icon brings up the screen showing your last six Safari pages and you can easily get back to DashPad, but this brings nothing to the table that you already don’t have.

It does have potential though and you might like it, but to find out you’ll have to pony up the $9.99. I consider paying first bad marketing, especially since it would be possible to let you try it out for a few days and if you didn’t pay up, the authentication would stop working. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the price — but if you’re really enamored with your Dashboard, you might think differently.

FAQ

Before using DashPad, read the FAQ below to make sure DashPad’s for you.

Q.) What platform does DashBoard run on?
A.) The iPad OS, exclusively.

Q.) How much does DashPad cost?
A.) DashPad costs $9.99.

Q.) How can I pay while still being secure?
A.) We use PayPal to process our transactions, which is safe and secure. We also never share your personal information.

Q.) How do I install DashPad after purchasing it?
A.) After purchasing DashPad, you will receive an email with a unique password in it. You can then enter that password on the login page, and will then be taken to the DashPad application.

Q.) Is DashPad for me? How can I justify the cost?
A.) DashPad is for anyone that wants to run small applications all at once. If you need to quickly check the time or add some numbers, DashPad is for you. Widgets are constantly added to DashPad to improve the user experience, so it’s functionality grows over time.

Q.) How will I know if DashPad is updated? Do I have to pay again?
A.) DashPad is always updating, and will update if a new version is available. Each update is free, and you can always check what version DashPad is running by looking at the top right hand corner in the DashPad App or up above.

Q.) What widgets are included with DashPad? Can I add more myself?
A.) Currently, DashPad has the following (in no particular order):

• Clock
• Calendar
• Calculator
• Unit Converter
• Sticky Note
• Yellow Pages Search
• Google Search
• Weather

You can’t add widgets yourself, not yet at least. We’re working on it.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 beta due in September

July 29, 2010 by Techz.in [Admin]*

  Info

Microsoft is readying a beta of its Internet Explorer (IE) 9 browser that it will roll out in September, according to Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner.

Turner shared the beta date during his morning keynote at the annual Microsoft Financial Analyst Meeting (FAM) on July 29.

According to several recent leaks, Microsoft had been targeting August as its beta delivery target for IE 9.Internet-Explorer-9 This beta is expected to be public (as the test previews have been), and to feature more of the user interface elements.

On July 29, Neowin.net reposted some screen shots from what they believe to be a newly leaked test build of IE 9. That build includes a new download manager, but doesn’t yet feature the new user interface.

Microsoft has been making good on its promise to deliver new technology preview builds of IE 9 every eight weeks. The first IE 9 developer preview went live in mid-March. The latest IE 9 test build was released in June.

The IE 9 builds Microsoft has released so far have been developer-targeted. They include the plumbing, specifically the new Microsoft JavaScript engine (which is codenamed “Chakra”) and the new graphics subsystem, coupled with a home page full of test sites. There’s no back button and no built-in security. It’s basically the IE 9 rendering engine and early tools.

Microsoft officials have not shared a target release-to-Web date for the final version of IE9, but it is expected by many Microsoft watchers in 2011.

I’ve asked Microsoft officials if they’re ready to share any more details about IE 9. If I get any more, I’ll update this post.

Firefox's next big innovation: A new OS-like interface (TAB CANDY)

July 28, 2010 by Techz.in [Admin]*

During 2010, Firefox has had much of its momentum as an alternative Web browser stolen by Google Chrome. However, a new Firefox innovation called Tab Candy will make Firefox act more like a operating system, with much-improved multitasking and sharing capabilities. In fact, if the Firefox team can pull off all of the features of Tab Candy that it recently demonstrated, it would leapfrog Chrome in functionality.

The Tab Candy functionality is being spearheaded by Aza Raskin, the Head of UX at Mozilla Labs. Raskin is the son of Macintosh creator Jef Raskin and he joined Mozilla in 2008 when his software company Humanized merged with Mozilla.

Raskin said, “How many of us keep tabs open as reminders of something we want to do or read later? We’re all suffering from infoguilt. We need a way to organize browsing, to see all of our tabs at once, and focus on the task at hand.”

With that mind, here’s what Tab Candy can do:

  • Organize tabs into groups that you can name and position on a desktop-like view (Figure A)
  • Save tab groups to look at later
  • Search through your tabs
  • Have multiple profiles so that you can sign into the same site with different logins in two different tab groups
  • Share tabs or tab groups between different computers and devices (Figure D)
  • Share tabs or tab groups with other users
  • Set up a shared tab group where several users can co-browse and see what each other is looking at on the screen
  • Choose colors or image backgrounds to distinguish different tab groups (Figure C)

[UPDATE] Safari 5 released, by Apple.

June 8, 2010 by Vishal Laul

Now this is.. very surprising, Just today the company did a keynote that we covered LIVE – but there they didn’t mention anything about Safari, now after its over, Apple releases – Safari 5 – it’s still not yet on the official site, we are eagerly waiting – it can come up any minute now! Safari Reader is making a debut in this version, and 30% speed boost over Safari 4 – Apple claims.

New version of Safari also adds up a new search engine – Bing, pretty surprising but that’s how it is – Google and Yahoo are still there ofcource, don’t freak out. The Reader feature is intriguing, as it auto-detects articles within webpages and pulls them out for an unencumbered text-only view. The idea sounds great, but we’ll naturally need to see how well it works in practical.

Apple been doing some benchmarking too, showing that its a whole 3%(!!!) faster than Google Chrome 5 and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6. Internet Explorer still laggs way behind, atleast right now.

Update: Finally Apple Safari 5 website got updated and it is available for download. Size of the file is 31 MB.
